Everlon Building Demolition and Site Restoration to Begin at Cape May County Airport

By Press Release

CAPE MAY COUNTY AIRPORT — A long-awaited project is coming in under budget and could lead to further economic development for Cape May County. Freeholder Will Morey is pleased to announce that the Cape May County Board of Chosen Freeholders awarded a contract at their Feb. 13 meeting to demolish the former Everlon Building and associated outbuildings. This demolition project at the Cape May County Airport is anticipated to start this April. The Ambient Group, LLC of Sewell, NJ, with a price of $2,392,105 was the lowest of seven (7) bids received for the project. The bids for the project varied and were as high as $5,927,309. Projected costs from the original engineer’s report came in at $3,400,000 to $4,755,000
The Everlon Building, also known as Building 95, was constructed in 1971 and was occupied by two fabric manufacturing companies, most recently the Everlon Fabrics Corporation. Abandoned in 1986, several smaller business operated in parts of the building in years following, but the building has remained unoccupied since the mid-1990’s . Multiple studies of the 185,000 square foot building had been conducted to repurpose the building, but due to environmental contamination and functionally obsolescence, it was determined it would be more economical to demolish the building than to remediate and renovate it to meet current standards.
The project consists of removing asbestos from the buildings prior to demolition, removal and disposal of above-ground storage silos and their contents, dewatering of tunnels and structures, demolition of the wastewater treatment building 99A, demolition of boiler building 99B, demolition of Building 95, disposal of contaminated concrete and site restoration. The buildings are anticipated to be demolished and the debris removed from the site by early August.
All businesses within the airport will remain open and accessible, and traffic along Breakwater Road will not be affected.
The Everlon demolition project is part of the County’s redevelopment plans by led by Freeholder Morey to encourage economic growth at the Cape May County Airport. The County is currently seeking grant funding for future redevelopment of the site.
