WILDWOOD — The beaches of the Wildwoods were named the best in New Jersey by a public survey completed this spring by the New Jersey Marine Sciences Consortium (NJMSC), working in conjunction with New Jersey Sea Grant, the Richard Stockton College Coastal Research Center and the New Jersey Division of Travel and Tourism.
NJMSC’s survey ranks beach communities in categories of Ecotourism, Family Vacation, Tourism, Events and Top Ten Beach overall. Wildwoods beaches won all five categories.
Ben Rose, marketing director for the Greater Wildwood Tourism Improvement and Development Authority (GWTIDA), thanked some of the nine million annual visitors to the Wildwoods who voted for their favorite beaches and pushed the Wildwoods over the top.
Rose told the Herald he credited the public works departments of Wildwood, Wildwood Crest and North Wildwood who “work tirelessly to keep our beaches clean and beautiful.” The three communities were combined for this year’s survey. In previous years, they were voted on separately.
“We market the Wildwood communities together,” Rose said. “It makes sense that they’re considered one beach.”
Rose said the beaches of the Wildwoods received 23,000 first place votes, while Ocean City, the nearest runner up, received 9,300 votes.
According to reports, finishing behind the Wildwoods and Ocean City in voting were the beach communities along Long Beach Island (also a joint entry), Asbury Park, Sea Isle City, Cape May, Island Beach State Park, Seaside Heights, Cape May Point and Avalon.
The beaches of Wildwood were ranked first in the inaugural survey in 2008 and Ocean City’s beaches won last year.
