WILDWOOD — The Board of Commissioners is in the process of amending the city’s trash collection ordinance that will limit the number of trash receptacles collected at curbside.
During their Oct. 4 meeting, the Commissioners discussed amending the ordinance to allow no more than 12, 32-gallon receptacles with a maximum weight of 50 pounds per receptacle, or, four 96-gallon receptacles to be placed at curbside.
The amendment applies to households, hotels, motels, restaurants, boarding houses, markets, stores, mercantile establishments or other places of habitation or commercial or residential operation.
“Only the allotted number will be taken,” City Administrator Chris Wood told the Herald. If a property has more trash than the allotted amount, “the owners will have to make arrangements to have the trash removed by an independent contractor.”
The city contracts out its trash removal. Reducing the amount of trash collected may result in a cost-savings.
“If anything, it might save the city as much as $100,000 in tipping fees,” said Wood.
Owners will be responsible for obtaining the appropriate receptacles, which “shall be rigid in construction and have a snug-fitting top.”
According to Wood the trash collection will continue on the same schedule of twice-a- week during the summer months with a switch to once-a-week in the winter.
The amendment to the ordinance does not affect collection of recyclables.
