Wildwood Beach

WILDWOOD – Have you ever wondered why Wildwood’s beaches are so big?
Wildwood’s beaches, 500 yards wide at points, are the largest in New Jersey, Newsworks reports
It started with the creation of Cape May’s harbor in 1911. It’s jetties extend 4,500 feet from its mouth into the Atlantic Ocean, creating erosion. The north jetty traps sand on the north side – the Wildwood side – starving beaches further south.
The development of Turtle Gut Inlet in 1922, located around Toledo Avenue in present-day Wildwood Crest, added to the issue.
Today, the sand in the natural ebb tidal flow that would have made its way to this channel gets diverted to Wildwood’s main beach, while eroding sand from Avalon and Stone Harbor naturally funnels into Hereford Inlet, the report continued.
From there, it makes its way via tidal action to Wildwood’s main beach.
