PETERSBURG – Upper Municipal Engineer Paul Dietrich informed township committee members at their Sept. 26 meeting of an updated survey from Stockton University’s Coastal Research Center for beaches in the Strathmere section.
“There are no surprises,” explained Dietrich. “There are minor losses in most areas except in the vicinity north of Williams Avenue and thus there will be an overall negative sand balance for Strathmere.”
Dietrich says he’s been talking with the Army Corps of Engineers to see what can be done to help the township’s island neighborhood.
“The north end of Ocean City will be getting Corps beach replenishment and this project is already awarded. Since the dredging equipment is so expensive to move, maybe we can push that it be mobilized for the Strathmere project,” Dietrich said.
“In any event, by late summer of next year–and avoiding spring because of endangered species timing concerns–the Corps will be addressing the replenishment needs of Strathmere along with the southern end of Ocean City and Sea Isle City,” Dietrich summed up.
