COURT HOUSE – The Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority and its partner organizations are pleased to announce the winners of the 2nd Annual County-wide Creative Recycling Contest:
Craft/Sculptor Category:
Paper Mache Mobile — A team effort beautifully crafted by Samantha Escher, Christa Blassman and Stephan and Avaclaire Scale of Petersburg in Upper Township.
Art Category:
Mixed Media Self Portrait — Sea Isle .Elementary School students Jake Elko, Madison Majors, and A.J. Kutscheru presented extraordinary, insightful self-portraits.
Purposeful Gadgets/Crafts Category:
Useful Items Constructed from Paper — Margaret Mace Elementary School students from North Wildwood constructed useful artifacts from paper that can serve as baskets, wall decor, flowerpots and more. Rachel Broadbent., Danielle Deritis, Michael Sharkey, Alyssa Sims, and Sarah Donnelly.
Game/Performance Art Category:
Reduce, Reuse and Recycle “Green Cape Crusaders” / Mr. O. Edification — A game, clothing and performance “all-in-one” created by the Wolf Cubs and Cub Scouts of Pack 79.
The winning entries will be exhibited at the 2012 Cape May County Earth. Day Fair being held at the Cape May County Park and Zoo on Sat., April 21, 2012. The contest winners will receive their awards, beginning at 12:00 noon, as part of the Earth Day Fair. festivities. Pack 79 will also present their innovative recycling performance after the awards ceremony.
Twenty-nine wonderfully crafted entries were submitted. This year’s participants were Sea Isle City Elementary School students, Margaret Mace Elementary School students, Wolf Cubs and Cub Scouts Pack 79, and several students from Petersburg/Upper Township.
All entries were evaluated by a group of volunteer judges, including Kathy Nichols, Art Teacher at Margaret Mace School in North Wildwood, Victoria Scales, Adjunct Instructor, Atlantic Cape Community College, and Alma George, Proprietor of Jalma Farms.
Organizations providing contest support and generous donations of awards for the contest winners include the Wetlands Institute of Stone Harbor, the Cape May County Park & Zoo, the Avalon Rose on 8th Restaurant, and the New Jersey Audubon Nature Center of Cape May.
“The interest, enthusiasm and creativity of all the participants in this contest is amazing,” said Lyn Crumbock, County Recycling Coordinator. “The judges have some interesting ideas for next year’s contest,” continued Crumbock.
