CAPE MAY – If you’ve ever seen a shore bird entangled in string from a balloon or found a beached dolphin which has asphyxiated with a trash bag lodged in its throat, then you already know why beach sweeps are so important. It is a problem not confined to New Jersey. There are islands around the world that are completely devoid of any life at all, thanks to the problem of worldwide plastic pollution. Plastic never leaves the environment. It only breaks down until ingested by all manner of sea creatures which eventually starve to death with guts are full of indigestible plastic particles.
The only way to remove trash, plastics and dangerous debris from our beaches and harbor is by picking it up. Please consider helping out April 25 with Clean Ocean Action’s biannual beach sweep. Meet at the Nature Center of Cape May, 1600 Delaware Avenue in Cape May (near the Coast Guard Base) at 9:00 a.m. We’ll provide gloves, bags and instruction, you provide the labor. Remember to dress appropriately: sturdy shoes, sun block, long sleeves, hats, etc.
So, please come out to the Nature Center on April, Saturday the 25th and be part of the solution to ocean pollution.
