Skimmers Stall Beach Vehicle Access to Stone Harbor Point

Black Skimmer

By Press Release

STONE HARBOR — The Borough of Stone Harbor passed a Resolution No. 2018-S-169 at the Aug. 21, 2018 Council Meeting extending the closure of Stone Harbor Point to beach vehicles until Oct. 1, 2018
Black skimmers, a state endangered bird, are having a successful nesting season at Stone Harbor Point.
They are doing so well that their nesting season is going to last beyond Labor Day, which is typically when recreation vehicles are permitted back on the Point.
Since black skimmers chicks are sand colored, mobile and do not stay within the fenced areas, they are highly susceptible to being run over. This has led to the decision by Borough Council, at the request of NJDEP, to postpone the opening of the Point to vehicles until at least October 1st, which is the date the rest of Stone Harbor’s beaches are open to recreation vehicles.
Pedestrian access will remain open (as it has been all summer). This site is one of only three successful skimmer colonies in the state, and we are excited that they have done so well here this year!
Beach vehicle permits will still go on sale at Borough Hall beginning Tuesday, Sept. 4.
