Sidewalk Link Bolsters Pedestrian Safety

By Herald Staff

COURT HOUSE – Where the sidewalk ended it now continues.
Middle Township Deputy Mayor Daniel Lockwood and Committeeman Michael Clark presided over a ribbon-cutting ceremony Jan. 16 near Locust Lane and Route 9 where a 1,200-foot section of sidewalk was recently installed. That missing link connects East Pacific Avenue and another sidewalk on the west side of Route 9 that makes it possible to walk safely out of traffic past the post office and further south.
Joining the officials in the area of 591 Route 9 South was township Administrator Constance Mahon and several residents from Emeritus of Cape May, which is near to the new sidewalk extension.
Without fanfare, the officials snipped the blue ribbon to officially open the final component of a multi-phase sidewalk installation project.
“This is a small stretch of sidewalk, but it’s still a big deal,” Lockwood stated. “With the completion of this section of pavement, we now have an uninterrupted walkway from south of Shell Bay Avenue to north of Stone Harbor Boulevard. Making our downtown area more safely accessible is a win/win for our residents and local businesses.”
The project was announced in August by Mayor Timothy Donohue. At the time he stated, “I’m glad we were able to find the funding for this important improvement.”
“This sidewalk project will allow residents, especially our seniors living at Emeritus, on Lee Lane and nearby areas, to have uninterrupted access to downtown shopping as well as municipal and county services provided in Cape May Court House.”
Construction was to start in October and be done in November. Middle Township was exploring cost-sharing opportunities with various agencies to offset the approximately $115,000 construction cost, the mayor stated at that time.
