TRENTON – Sen. Michael Testa (R-1st) urged residents in the First Legislative District to be aware of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) threat, but emphasized that there is no reason to panic.

According to a release, “The best thing the state can do, the best thing schools and businesses can do, and the best thing families can do is be prepared,” stated Testa (R-1). “By following some basic precautions, we all can minimize the risk to ourselves and our families. The most effective safeguards include keeping hands clean and avoiding close contact with sick people. It’s common sense, and it is effective.”

COVID-19 is a new form of the coronavirus that causes respiratory illness which may appear as cold-like symptoms. Testa noted that there are no active cases of the novel coronavirus in New Jersey.

“The spread of the virus is documented on every newscast and in every newspaper on a daily basis,” Testa stated. “People are experiencing a fear of the unknown as much as anything else. Follow the advice of the experts and healthcare professionals, and don’t over-react to social media posts. Information from reliable and trustworthy sources is the best defense.”

The State of New Jersey Department of Health operates a 24-hour hotline staffed by healthcare professionals to answer questions about the COVID-19. Call the hotline at 1-800-222-1222, and more information is available on the department’s website.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the nation’s health protection agency, has extensive information about the novel coronavirus and how to deal with it on a page on their website.
