Public Hearing to be Held on Beach Feasibility Study

By Press Release

NORTH WILDWOOD – The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s Bureau of Coastal Engineering will host a public hearing Feb. 21 at 2 p.m. in the public meeting room of North Wildwood City Hall to discuss the feasibility study put forth by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers that addresses hurricane and storm damage reduction alternatives for North Wildwood, Wildwood, Wildwood Crest and the Diamond Beach section of Lower Township with respect to the area’s beaches.
The Bureau of Coastal Engineering has invited the public to attend the public hearing and present written or oral comments on the feasibility report, the environmental assessment and the recommended plan.
A copy of the report has been provided to each municipality and can be viewed by the public online at: www.nap.usace.army.mil/Missions/CivilWorks/PublicNoticesReports.
The recommended plan in the feasibility report includes the restoration of a berm and dune utilizing sand hydraulically back-passed from the beaches of Wildwood, Wildwood Crest and Diamond Beach. The plan was developed after the evaluation of structural and non-structural alternatives to protect property within the study area. The report states that the beaches in these areas have historically accreted large quantities of sand, and that sand that can redistributed from the beach in Wildwood, Wildwood Crest and Diamond Beach to provide beach nourishment material to reduce storm damage to the entire island in the form of a storm protective berm and dune.
