BRIGANTINE – The Marine Mammal Stranding Center, New Jersey’s only facility dedicated to the rescue of sick and injured marine mammals and sea turtles, is alerting the public of an increased number of beached seals as the weather warms up.
Officials with the MMSC say they received eight calls about seals on beaches in Avalon, Ventnor, Long Beach Island, Bayville, and Avon By The Sea, March 13. Officials say this is not uncommon during this time of year. The freezing temperatures have kept seals away from New Jersey beaches, but now that the milder weather has returned, the seals are “hauling out” to soak in the sun. Many seals are traveling more and chasing food, and will come to shore after eating to rest or dry off on the sunny beaches. Officials say most of the animals reported today are healthy, and that only two had to be picked up for evaluation at the Center.
If you spot a seal or other marine mammal on the beach, you should:
• Contact the MMSC immediately by calling (609) 266-0538
• Stay at least 50 feet away from the animal
• Keep pets away from the animal
• Take a cell phone picture to help MMSC staff with documentation
It is important to remember that these wild animals can be dangerous and should be treated as such. A frightened seal is unpredictable, and will lash out when necessary.
