CAPE MAY – With the primary goal of improving the usability of the space, New Jersey Audubon’s Nature Center of Cape May has embarked upon a major upgrade of the Charlotte Todd Education Hall which is one of five buildings that comprise the Delaware Avenue campus. According to Director Gretchen Whitman, “This is the only space we have that is large enough to accommodate classes and seminars of 25 or more people; it is our principle classroom building. But it’s seen hard use and has been in need of an upgrade for years. Of course, while we’re at it, we want to make sure that any upgrades will enhance the energy efficiency of the space.”
The first phase of the project, a complete HVAC upgrade, was completed in June. In addition to air conditioning and a new heating system, insulation throughout the building was added. The second phase of the project, new energy efficient doors, windows and siding was commenced in late August. Both phases were paid for by a grant from the Gardnier Fund, but those funds have been expended.
Whitman has yet to secure a source of funding for the third and final phase of the project.
“We are in dire need of new floor covering. We also want to relocate one non-load-bearing wall before installing new kitchen cabinets which have already been donated. We also have a pledge for new kitchen appliances. In my perfect world, a local community contractor will step forward and volunteer to move the wall, install the cabinets and appliances; maybe even give us a new floor.”
The Director sums up the project and continuing need, “We’ve made huge strides in terms of energy efficiency, but there’s much yet to do, and we’ve stretched the grant money as far as we can. And we still need a new roof; Sandy did a number on the old roof.”
The Nature Center of Cape May does the important work of educating children and adults about the fragile nature of our marine environment and the creatures that call this environment home. Situated on the south rim of Cape May Harbor the Center is a visible and constant reminder of what we all hold dear as a community, the challenge and promise of our coastal heritage.
Donations in the form of labor, material and funding are urgently needed to complete this important project. Please contact Sanctuary Director Gretchen Whitman if you are able and willing to lend assistance. She may be contacted via phone, 609-898-8848.
