CAPE MAY – Why are beach sweeps so important? Because even though those of us who live at the shore know how hazardous balloons and plastic bags can be to marine life, visitors to the shore are very often less careful. For over 30 years Clean Ocean Action has carefully tracked and cataloged the type of debris and refuse recovered during every clean up so that focused emphasis can be placed on specific items. 20 years ago it was hypodermic needles, 10 years ago it was plastic 6-pack rings, and today it is balloons and plastic shopping bags.
The only way to remove trash and dangerous debris from our beaches and harbor is by picking it up. Please consider joining us Oct. 25 for Clean Ocean Action’s biannual beach sweep. We’ll meet at the Nature Center of Cape May at 9:00. We’ll provide gloves, bags and instruction, you provide the labor. Remember to dress appropriately: sturdy shoes, sun block, hats, etc.
If you’ve ever seen a shore bird entangled in string from a balloon or found a beached dolphin which has asphyxiated from a trash bag lodged in its throat, you’ll know why beach sweeps are so important. So, please come out to the Nature Center on Saturday the 25th and be part of the solution to ocean pollution.
