Nature Center Celebrates Earth Day

By Sponsored Content

CAPE MAY – April 22, the Nature Center of Cape May will celebrate Earth Day by inviting three speakers to share their ideas of how we all can make a positive impact on our planet, environment and on our communities.
First, Stacey Davis will discuss “Building Community through CSA”. CSA or Community Supported Agriculture is nothing less than a direct link between farmer and consumer. When you join a CSA you quite literally buy a “share” of the harvest and then throughout the season you’ll enjoy fresh vegetables, flowers, herbs, eggs, honey, etc. It’s good for the farmer, the consumer, the community and the environment. Want to learn more? Come out and hear what Stacey has to say.
Lisa Ferguson from the Wetland Institute will discuss a project called, “ReTurn the Favor.” ReTurn the Favor is a grass-roots conservation campaign that rescues marooned horseshoe crabs and returns them to the waters edge. It’s not unusual for these very vulnerable creatures to be washed over and stranded behind the first dune line when the lunar high tide corresponds with their spring migration. If not rescued by humans, these endangered members of our local environment face a slow and agonizing death.
Finally, Sanctuary Director Gretchen Whitman will discuss Saturday’s (April 26) Clean Ocean Action’s Beach Sweep and marine debris clean-up. Clean Ocean Action got its start 30 years ago in response to the issue of unrestricted dumping of garbage and refuse off of New Jersey’s beaches. The Director reminds all of us that constant vigilance and community participation are a must if we are to avoid a repeat of the days when syringes, hospital waste and entangled sea creatures littered our beaches.
Harborside Chats begin at 6:00 in the Charlotte VanLeer Todd Education Hall. Chats are free but donations toward the renovation of the Hall are requested. Refreshments will be served.
