Middle Township Looks Forward to ‘Shell-A-Bration’

By Press Release

COURT HOUSE – April 4, the American Littoral Society and Conserve Wildlife Foundation of New Jersey will host a day of free family fun and oyster reef building along Middle Township’s Bayshore. Dubbed “Shell-a-Bration,” the event will focus on volunteers’ efforts to help build an approximately 200 foot oyster reef offshore to test whether the reef bars help reduce beach erosion and create calmer water for spawning horseshoe crabs.
Shell-a-Bration will also feature a bonfire on the beach, barbecue pit and oysters, and family-friendly activities such as a “Green Eggs in the Sand” Easter egg hunt. The event will take place from 2 to 6 p.m., with remarks from conservation leaders and project discussion at 4:30 p.m.
The Shell-a-Bration is rain or shine. Attendees can park along South Reeds Beach Drive, but are asked to be mindful of local residents’ driveways. Volunteers should wear closed-toed shoes, warm clothes, and bring a change of dry clothes, boots and waders. Gloves will be provided. The Shell-a-Bration will be a free picnic-style event, so guests are encouraged to bring blankets and chairs.
“We’re excited to partner with a number of organizations to bring the Shell-a-Bration to our Bayshore April 4! Our residents will see more events like this as we focus on preserving and enhancing the fragile ecosystem, while promoting our fledgling oyster industry and eco-tourism opportunities in Middle Township,” said Mayor Tim Donohue.
