Middle Residents Recycle 9.5 Tons of Paper

By Al Campbell

COURT HOUSE – In what may have been Middle Township’s most successful paper shredding day, Nov. 9, 9.5 tons were processed from pages to confetti-like consistency.
Traffic lined up on Mechanic Street, before the 9 a.m. official start time, and continued until noon. The line wound its way to 400 W. Mechanic, the Public Works yard where two mechanized trucks from DocuVault Delaware Valley, based in Deptford chewed through the mountain of unwanted paper.
According to Rita Kirk of the Public Works Department, over 325 vehicles toted that tonnage to the collection site.
In addition to paper, 1,000 pounds of cardboard was recycled.
During the open shred event, Middle Township Department of Recreation accepted shoes as part of the ShoeBox Recycling Program. All paired men’s, women’s, and children’s shoes in usable condition were accepted and later distributed to those in need. Residents brought six boxes of those unwanted shoes to recycle.
The shoes will also benefit the township Recreation Department which earns $20 per 40-pound box for the donated shoes.
Collection continues in the program. Boxes are located at the Baker Center at Davies Sports Complex, MLK Center, Whitesboro, DeVico Senior Center, Romney Place, Township Hall, 33 Mechanic St., and at the Public Works yard.
The next shredding day is tentatively set for April 12, 2014.
