Lower MUA to Dedicate Solar Energy Field

By Jack Fichter

VILLAS — Lower Township Municipal Utilities Authority (MUA) has completed its solar field and will dedicate the array Nov. 2 at 4 p.m., prior to its monthly meeting.
The system is operating, producing power MUA would otherwise purchase from Atlantic City Electric. The solar panels occupy about seven acres of MUA property that would otherwise be useless.
The solar panel system generates 1.3 megawatts of electricity which is 90 percent of the MUA’s power needs.
At press preview earlier in the month, MUA Executive Director Matthew Ecker said it’s estimated the solar field will save the MUA as much as $15,000 per month.
“Those are savings initially, we think those savings are going to escalate as utility prices escalates and this is stable,” he said.
The new 1.3 MW unit will produce electricity at a cost of just under 4 cents per kW for the first five years with an escalation rate of $0.05 per kW during the 15-year term of the contract.
Current residential electric rates average 13 cents per kW.
