WILDWOOD — Wildwood police received a call the evening of Wed. Nov. 16 reporting a strong smell of gasoline in the area of the 600 block of Burke Avenue.
Upon arrival officers noted a large amount fuel floating on the water in Ottens Harbor.
The Marine Unit of the New Jersey State Police was contacted, as well as the United States Coast Guard and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. The Wildwood Fire Department also responded to the scene.
“It was an undetermined amount of a petroleum product,” Sgt. 1st Class Dave Labrioli of the State Police told the Herald.
“It was reported as a diesel sheen in the harbor,” said Larry Hanja, a spokesman for the NJDEP. “There was no recoverable fuel.”
According to Labrioli, troopers who arrived at the scene the morning of Nov. 17 found the sheen gone.
“As of right now,” said Labrioli, “everything is dissipated.”
Local authorities are continuing their investigation into the source of the spill.
