CAPE MAY – The Federal Emergency Management Agency recently revised flood insurance rate maps for the City of Cape May. The maps will be presented at a public meeting Oct. 11 at 6:30 p.m. at Convention Hall located at 714 Beach Avenue.
Flood maps are intended to show the extent to which areas are at risk for flooding. The updated maps become effective Oct. 5, 2017. The maps will be used to determine flood insurance and building requirements.
City engineer Tom Thornton of Mott MacDonald will present the new FEMA maps and assist Cape May City residents in learning how to access site-specific maps online. City Manager Neil Young and other staff members will also be available to respond to questions.
Residents and property owners will gain an understanding of the flood map revision process, and will have the opportunity to view the maps, learn about flooding risks and ask questions regarding what the new maps mean for their properties.
Questions about flood insurance, building permits, flood vents and more can be raised. If the information sought is not immediately available, City officials will follow up with residents and property owners.
Year-round and seasonal homeowners, business owners, renters, real estate agents, mortgage lenders, surveyors and insurance agents are encouraged to attend the meeting. For further information please call (609) 884-9536.
