Fishermen’s Energy Update: Event Postponed

By Herald Staff

ATLANTIC CITY — Due to the potential for inclement weather, a press event scheduled for Wednesday morning, Aug. 19, has been postponed.
Fisherman’s Energy had been scheduled to commence their offshore geophysical survey (which begins the Met Tower installation process) by having an event on the docks in Atlantic City, at 725 North Maryland Avenue.
Fishermen’s Energy is a partnership of local members of the fishing industry that are working on an offshore wind energy project.
According to a release, August marks a milestone for Fishermen’s Energy of New Jersey as the team returns to familiar offshore territory, but for a reason other than fishing. This week the Cape May based fishing vessel Capt. Bob is being outfitted with a suite of scientific equipment to study an offshore location 12 miles southeast of Atlantic City, in preparation for installing one of the first offshore wind farms in the U.S.
One of the first steps in evaluating an offshore site for wind turbine suitability is to gain a thorough understanding of the environmental conditions. The long term measurement of wind speed and direction at multiple heights is critical for determining the amount and quality of available wind energy. Ocean wave and current information, studies of the seafloor and marine mammal activity are all needed so that wind farm developers can responsibly design and build these “green energy” facilities.
