Filling Tower Caused Discolored Water

By Jack Fichter

VILLAS — Some residents found their drinking water here rusty in appearance from Lower Township Municipal Utilities Authority Wed., June 23.
The cause of the water discoloration was MUA filling up the new Millman Water Tower on Bayshore Road. The water should again be clear at this time.
MUA Executive Director said the water tower project must be completed by August 1 and the authority did not want to fill up the 500,000 gallon tank in July because of heavy use by water customers. He said the contractor notified MUA late Monday that the inside of the tank was being treated for disinfection.
DeMarcantonio said the contractor notified MUA it needed to fill the tank half full on Tue., June 22 and finish it Wed., June 23.
“We pushed water from the airport all the way up through the Villas,” he said.
The area that experienced the rust colored water has PVC piping and never experiences reddish water, said DeMarcantonio. He water demand was high due to very hot weather.
MUA normally pumps 1 million gallons a day but pumped 1.5 million gallons Wed., June 23. He said the water tower in now full and the water should be clear.
DeMarcantonio said the water was safe to drink and it was just higher than normal in iron. He said MUA had little time to notify water customers.
