Environmental Stewards Graduate, Tour Swainton Facility

SWAINTON — The Cape May County Board of Agriculture convened its September meeting at the USDA Plant Material Center, 1536 Route 9 on Sept. 5.
Members toured the center, escorted by Bill Skaradek, center director, on a a hay bale filled trailor pulled by a tractor through the experimental facility’s fields.
Earlier in the evening, the Cape May County Beach Plum Association met, and later enjoyed the desserts made by the fruits of the seashore trees.
At the beginning of the Board of Agriculture meeting, County Agent Jenny Carleo presented members of the county’s first Environmental Stewards graduation certificates and T-shirts on completing the 60-hour classroom portion of their training. They will embark on 60 hours of volunteer time spent in a variety of ways to aid the environment, according to Bruce Barber, who heads Rutgers Environmental Stewardship Program.
