WOODBINE – Woodbine Borough Council was joined by state and county officials when inclement weather dictated an indoor “groundbreaking” ceremony March 20 for an eco-park by the elementary school.
Mayor William Pikolycky noted the “Exciting and innovative project which is an excellent example of cooperation between the Borough of Woodbine and Cape May County working together to convert woodlands into an ecological educational and recreational opportunity.”
The initial phase will be the development of eight acres of a 25-acre tract which will complement activities at the Woodbine Community School Complex and the Woodbine Branch of the County Library, according to a release.
The mayor stated the park is “effectively creating a ‘classroom in nature.'”
The park will become a part of the Stockton University Anne Azeez Instructional Site at the Sam Azeez Museum of Woodbine Heritage, which is within walking distance of the project.
Further, the park will include a bikeway extension, funded by state Department of Transportation, and is part of the proposed county-long bikeway system, which would ultimately go from Belleplain State Forest to the County Park and Zoo.
Woodbine’s bikeway system is at the convergence of the Coastal Heritage Trail, High Point to Cape May Trail, the Bayshore Heritage Byway, and the Pine Barrens Byway, Pikolycky stated.
Woodbine is a walkers/bikers school district with no courtesy bussing.
