Earth Day Logo Winners Awarded Prizes

CREST HAVEN — Looking forward to the county’s April 21 celebration of Earth Day in the County Park, Freeholder Vice Director M. Susan Sheppard on Tue., March 27 presented winners their awards. Over 250 entries were received, according to Mike Laffey, county parks director.
First place went to Alex Dever, a student at Cape May County Technical High School for his work that depicts a motion picture start device with the words “Set the Scene, Go Green.” For his work, Dever received a $75 prize and bragging rights for having his design grace the 2012 Earth Day T-shirt.
Third place winner, Peyton Matura, a third grader in Upper Township Elementary School depicted a stage with earth being one of the characters and recycling-type arrows pointing up and down.
Absent from the ceremony was second prize winner Daniel Johnson of Wildwood Middle School. His logo was that of a smiling earth with a sign, Set the Scene, Go Green.
Both second and third place winners received $50. All winners got a plaque and county goodie bag.
Earth Day will take place at the Cape May County Park and Zoo, April 21 from 8:30 a.m. with a one-mile fun run and 5 K race at 9 a.m.
Opening ceremonies will be held at 10 a.m. and the event, featuring an array of demonstrations and exhibits, will continue until 4 p.m.
