VILLAS – Lower Township Manager James Ridgway updated Lower Township Council on the status of a project that would restore much of the coastline along the Cape May Beach and Villas section of the township that had been damaged since Hurricane Sandy in 2012.
Stewart Farrell, director of Stockton College’s Coastal Research Center, explained that the goal is ecosystem restoration in Villas section of bay-side beach by creating an 80-foot wide berm over a project length of 29,000 feet.
The plan entails a one-time placement of sand for horseshoe crab and shorebird habitat.
Ridgway also noted that the project would also have positive impacts on homeowner’s flood insurance plans.
The project needs state and federal funding to move forward. Then it can progress with completing the construction plans and advertising a construction contract.
