COURT HOUSE – Freeholder Director Daniel Beyel announced that the County will complete approximately $1.2 Million in emergency road repairs due to the severe weather that we experienced this past winter.
At their March 23, 2010 meeting, the Board of Chosen Freeholders awarded a construction contract in the amount of $1,189,182.75 to South State, Inc. of Bridgeton, New Jersey to perform emergency road repairs. South State’s bid was the lowest of five bids received for this contract.
Director Beyel said, “This past winter season has had detrimental effects on certain roadway surfaces. The excessive moisture and the frequent freeze and thaw cycles during the winter have caused some roadways to pothole and heave.”
County Engineer Dale Foster added, “The typical patching of the roadway is only a temporary repair and many times does not address the “rideability” or smoothness of the road. Some of the worst sections of roadways have been selected to be repaired by the means of either removing two or five inches of the existing asphalt and replacing the same with new hot mix asphalt.”
There are many sections of roadways that need to be addressed, however, due to funding limitations or upcoming utility work, only a limited number of roadways can be addressed. Some of the roadways selected to be repaired under this program are:
· Dias Creek Road from Mechanic Street to Shunpike Road in Middle Township
· Ocean Drive from 8th Street to 11th Street in Avalon
· Corsons Tavern Road from Kings Highway north to the sod farm in Dennis Township
· Court House – South Dennis Road from US Route 9 to Winding Way in Middle Township
· Ocean Drive from NJ Route 109 to Middle Thorofare Bridge in Lower Township
· Roosevelt Boulevard at Vernon Road (Garden State Parkway Southbound Exit Ramp) in Upper Township
Most of the work under this repair program is expected to be completed by Memorial Day Weekend, weather permitting. Other roads not being addressed by this contract will be patched and repaired by the County Road Department.
