County MUA Encourages Boat Shrink Wrap Recycling

By Herald Staff

SWAINTON — As boating season approaches and folks prepare their vessels for water, Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority (CMCMUA) reminds boat owners not to throw away their boat shrink wrap but rather to recycle it.
The authority’s recycling program provides an opportunity for boaters, marinas, boat storage yards, municipalities and individuals to deliver their clear, white and/or blue colored boat shrink wrap to the Transfer Station in Burleigh or to the Sanitary Landfill Complex in Woodbine during normal business hours.
Shrink wrap used to winterize boats must be clean and free of other debris. Farms, nurseries and gardeners can recycle greenhouse plastic film through the same program.
As quantities are accumulated, the materials will then be processed by an independent recycler and returned to the market as plastic lumber for building decks and docks.
CMCMUA also has ongoing recycling programs for additional waste materials typically generated by marinas and recreational boaters, like scrap metal, large bulky rigid plastics, oil and water based paints and the usual household recyclables. Scrap metal and rigid plastics delivered source separated are accepted free at both of the aforementioned locations.
Paint is accepted only at the Transfer Station for a fee of $1.25 per one-gallon can and $6.25 per five-gallon bucket.
To help marinas educate their customers about recycling bottles and cans generated while boating, the “Boater’s Guide to Recycling” is available free to all marinas by contacting the authority.
Since this time last year, when the program was first introduced, 16.47 tons of plastic film has been recycled. The program was developed in cooperation with the Department of Environmental Protection’s Coastal Management Program, New Jersey Marine Sciences Consortium, and the Department of Transportation’s Office of Maritime Resources, I BOAT NJ Program.
