AVALON – Dr. Stewart Farrell of the Stockton University Coastal Research Center reported on the state of the Avalon beaches Aug. 14.
The Coastal Research Center quarterly measures the sand on various Avalon beaches. The report was for the second quarter, March 1 to May 31.
Farrell said a relatively quiet storm season so far, combined with a lot of southeast winds, have resulted in the north-end beaches, from the 8th Street jetty to 15th Street, having sand added to the shoreline.
“This was not sand building up hundreds of feet out in the ocean as we saw before,” Farrell said. Southeast winds help sand move north, he added.
Farrell noted the net sand gain, about 34,000 cubic yards, is “not huge by net positive.” He credited the quiet storm season as helping to prevent the loss of the sand placed on the north end by the borough’s spring backpassing exercise.
