CAPE MAY – Taking advantage of a last minute influx of anticipated volunteers, New Jersey Audubon Sanctuary Director Gretchen Whitman has opted to expand this Saturday’s (4/21) beach sweep to include heavily littered areas between Beach Avenue and Cape May’s strand. In addition to cleaning the shorelines, volunteers will participate in a restoration of adjacent overgrown lots ridding the area of invasive nuisance plants.
In addition to approximately 70 recruit volunteers from Coast Guard recruit company, L-186, Whitman is expecting 30 or more employee volunteers from Comcast, and an equal number from the Philadelphia Chapter of Sea Shepherd, as well as volunteers from the Cape May Garden Club, Coast Guard Auxiliary, Nature Center staff, volunteers and concerned citizens from all over Cape May County and beyond.
Volunteers will begin gathering at the New Jersey Audubon Nature Center, 1600 Delaware Avenue, Cape May, NJ at 8:30 a.m. this Sat., April 21, 2012, and will be “teamed” and dispatched from the Center. Trash bags and a limited number of work gloves will be available. Volunteers are advised to wear sturdy shoes, long pants, and wide-brimmed hats and apply sunscreen.
For over 25 years, this bi-annual event has been organized by Clean Ocean Action which is a broad based coalition of over 100 civic, community, environmental and business groups united with the single goal of protecting and preserving New Jersey’s ocean habitat. Cape May harbor was designated an official New Jersey Beach in 2009. The Nature Center of Cape May has evolved as the Protector of Cape May Harbor since the abandoned boat issue surfaced in 2007. Cape May’s annual Harbor Fest, June 16th, is a direct result of this effort.
