CAPE MAY — Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Cape May County and NJ Audubon’s Nature Center of Cape May are accepting applications for the 2012 Rutgers 4-H Summer Teen Leadership Institute for youth ages 13-18. The institute will take place at the Nature Center of Cape May’s environmental education campus on Cape May Harbor, in Cape May, NJ.
The eight-week program, from June 22 through August 17, provides junior high and high school students with an invaluable leadership and learning experience through a variety of service, teaching and social activities. It coincides with Summer Children’s Program day camps held at the nature center. Professional NJ Audubon teacher naturalists provide teens with mentoring in marine science, teaching skills and successful work habits. Rutgers 4-H educators lead teens in youth-driven community service projects and leadership skills development activities.
This institute is designed for teens who are interested in marine and environmental science and for those who enjoy working with children and helping them learn in an outdoor, hands-on environment. The benefits of attending the institute include meeting other teens who have the same interests, earning valuable community service credits and gaining important extracurricular work and leadership training. These experiences prove invaluable in job seeking and in successful acceptance to preferred colleges.
Institute participants are expected to job shadow nature center teacher-naturalists for eight to ten hours weekly and to attend a weekly training session every Friday from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Lunch is included. Coordinators try to accommodate teens’ outside work schedules. The institute will include several field trips to area Rutgers marine science facilities where teens will interact with acclaimed Rutgers University scientists. Institute participants will culminate their experience by coordinating a day-long family fair, the Oyster Olympics.
A mandatory orientation session will be held Friday, June 22, 2012, from 10 a.m. to noon at NJ Audubon’s Nature Center of Cape May. The institute fee of $250 provides for professional instruction by New Jersey Audubon and Rutgers 4-H educators and for the cost of all materials, food and activities for the entire eight weeks.
