VILLAS – Lower Township Elks Lodge 2838 recently celebrated the organization’s 150th anniversary by providing a $1,500 grant to the Lower Township Police Camp for Youths.
That is a fun-filled, educational program that brings police together with young people of the township with the aim to control illegal drug use.
The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks has a long history that features the principles of Charity, Justice, Brotherly Love, and Fidelity.
Created in 1868 by a group of actors known as the “Jolly Corks” in New York City, the organization’s mission now stresses taking care of veterans and supporting youth through various locally-based programs.
Local “Exalted Ruler” Jerry Krause explained that the Elks support various programs such as Run for the Fallen and Wreaths Across America.
They also provide support to the Disabled American Veterans to provide transportation to veterans who must visit U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs medical facilities.
The Elks also support local Boy and Girl Scout programs and drug awareness programs.
The local Elks Lodge is located at 917 Bayshore Ave., Villas.
