PETERSBURG – The Upper Township Committee approved a resolution Sept. 26 supporting a “Parents’ Bill of Rights.”
The vote in support is the township’s official response to the recently implemented revision to the state Department of Education requirements for health and sexuality education for all children in state-supported and public schools.
Committee member Kim Hayes spoke out against the standards in conjunction with the vote.
“The state is handing down these regulations with no concern for parents’ input. If local schools don’t adhere to them, they risk losing funding or even being taken over by the state. Thus, schools’ hands are tied as to what actions they can take,” said Hayes.
During the public comment portion of the meeting, a parent said he was “disgusted” by the “totally deaf ears” among municipal Board of Education members. The week prior, the board voted in favor of the state guidelines in the face of organized opposition from parents.
“What we are seeking is that parents are put back into the conversation about our children’s education,” Hayes said.
