OCEAN CITY – Over 100 concerned parents, students and citizens joined for a Nov. 3 panel discussion in the Ocean City High School library. This was the first of a series to address current issues including drug and alcohol abuse and teenage suicide.
The school brought together a panel to address those issues but also to inform of the services available.
The panel included: Director of Student Services Lauren Sacs, student assistant coordinator for Ocean City School District, Tifaya-Nazja Noble, district social worker (mental health), Noel Hiers, of Traumatic Loss Coalition, Valerie Watson, access manager of Cape Counseling and Ashley Curcio, bereavement coordinator from The Alcove.
The panel stressed the importance of awareness of services, using the available services, symptoms of drug and alcohol abuse as well as warning signs of mental illness in children.
The importance of speaking honestly and openly with teens and tips on doing so were highlighted, including planning ahead when discussing difficult topics, having a clear goal, and not being afraid to ask difficult questions.
Hiers stressed the urgency of “finding someone that connects with your child.” She explained that teens need someone or something they feel connected to, this may include a therapist or social worker.
“Not all social workers and therapists are created equal”, finding one that connects with your child is key, explained Hiers.
Panelists explained that many services are available, some free, and the 24-hour screening hotline is ‘your friend’ and the quickest way to get assistance if anyone finds they or someone they know is in crisis.
Staff, guidance, panelists and members of Ocean City Police Department were present for one-on-one questions and discussion following the panelists’ address.
Ocean City School Board is working to hire another district-wide social worker who would cover all of the city schools.
The board is also working on forming a committee to address school issues, those interested can still join.
