PHILADELPHIA – Educators change the lives of students every day. Their impact goes beyond one individual, it can change an entire community. Now is the chance for those teachers to stand up and be recognized for their exemplary contributions.
For 11 years, the National Liberty Museum and State Farm have recognized “Teachers as Heroes,” ordinary Americans who, through extraordinary efforts, impact students across the nation. The subcategories for nominees include Exceptional Teacher, Caring Classroom and Good Neighbor.
Members of the community, parents, students and peers are encouraged to enter submissions until March 3. Winners will be recognized in May’s annual Teach as a Hero Award Ceremony.
The heroes celebrated in the past include:
* Kevin Allen Wagner, Social Studies teacher and department chair at Carlisle High School, who has served as a teacher and mentor throughout his entire career. In addition to leading the department, he has been the leader of the School’s Model United National group and established the first Gay/Straight Alliance in school district.
* Amy Anderson founded the American Sign Language program at Ocean City High School and has worked to make Ocean City a “deaf-friendly” town. In addition to in-classroom-training, Amy sends her students to volunteer directly with the deaf community. She teaches her students a valuable skill while reinforcing the message that people, who may appear different, are equal and a variation of ourselves, all deserving of respect and opportunities.
The National Liberty Museum is dedicated to preserving America’s heritage of freedom by encouraging people to find their own place in the story of liberty. The core values of the museum include leadership and good character; diversity and inclusion; peaceful conflict resolution; and civic engagement. It is the only museum in the country dedicated to advancing liberty through fostering strong character and civic engagement.
