MAYS LANDING – Atlantic Cape Community College accepted a nearly $1.5 million, five-year grant to operate a five-year program to increase college retention and graduation rates of 200 student participants annually.
The award allows for $292,340 annually over five years, Sept. 1, 2015-Aug. 31, 2020. The college’s Board of Trustees met July 28 to approve acceptance of the grant as well as act on personnel matters, contracts and purchases.
The grant is from the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Postsecondary Education for the Student Support Services Program.
In other grants action, the board approved submitting an application to the N.J. Department of Education FY’16 Perkins Grant program for a grant of $484,521, to run July 1, 2015-June 30, 2016.
Adult Basic Skills
Additionally, the board approved an Adult Basic Skills Contract with Literacy Volunteers Association Cape-Atlantic, $77,770, and Cape May County Technical School, $198,970, total of $361,580. Also included was Pleasantville Public Schools, $84,840.
The board accepted Fixed Wing Training Services of Ocean Aire Toms River to support aviation program courses and approved revising the college purchasing policy to coincide and agree with the County College Purchasing Law’s newly established bidding threshold of $35,000, effective Aug. 1.
In Other Business, the Board:
Approved a 2-percent salary increase for adjunct and senior adjunct instructors, effective Aug. 31. The board will review adjunct compensation annually to determine competitiveness.
Approved a revision to the tuition and fee schedule for FY’16, adjusting the fees of the following aviation programs: Private Pilot to $9,198/course; Instrument Pilot to $9,311/course; and Commercial Pilot to $23,990/course.
In the President’s Report:
Dr. Mitchell Levy, vice president of student affairs, and Jean McAlister, dean of resource development and president/Board of Trustee operations, presented the highlights of the 2015 commencement ceremony and showcased student success stories.
Chef Kelly McClay, dean of the Academy of Culinary Arts, introduced Chef Educator Annmarie Chelius of Ocean City who was named postsecondary 2015 CAFÉ/Sysco Corporation Educator of the Year.
Chelius was recognized for the honor at the 11th Annual Leadership Conference of the Center for the Advancement of Foodservice Education (CAFÉ), last month in Niagara Falls, N.Y.
“The thing I feel most special about is that I am a community college student,” stated Chelius, an ACA graduate. “It’s been a wonderful journey for me initially as a student of this fine establishment and now as a faculty member.”
