MAYS LANDING – The Middle States Commission on Higher Education granted reaccreditation for an eight-year term to Atlantic Cape Community College at its June 21 session, according to Dr. Barbara Gaba, president of Atlantic Cape.
The Middle States action followed an intensive 18-month self-study process that culminated in a Middle States Commission team visit in early April. The college’s self-study involved the participation of more than 70 faculty and staff members with the goal of completing a detailed analysis of all areas of the college’s operation. During the Middle States Commission team visit, the Board of Trustees, members from the Atlantic Cape Foundation, faculty, students and staff were interviewed.
Accreditation is a rigorous process in which external experts review every facet of a college’s administrative, financial, academic and student services functions. The Middle States Commission, which has accreditation jurisdiction over the majority of colleges and universities in the Mid-Atlantic states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, places an exceptionally high priority on continuous improvement and compliance.
The Middle States Commission is one of six regional accrediting bodies that oversee accreditation of over 4,700 of the nation’s colleges and universities. This accreditation is critical because colleges and universities must be accredited for their students to receive financial assistance, and only accredited colleges can receive public grants and contracts.
Gaba stated that the Board of Trustees, Foundation Trustees, faculty, staff, students and the community are deeply proud of the reaccreditation. “This achievement is a reflection of the dedication and hard work of our faculty, administration and staff at Atlantic Cape. Reaccreditation is an extraordinary accomplishment and we are proud to share this with Atlantic and Cape May counties.”
