WILDWOOD — While he may not be going to the State Senate in Trenton this January to represent the First District, Republican candidate David DeWeese has his eye on the future. DeWeese told the Herald that he intends to run again.
“We did this campaign in seven months,” he said. “Now we have two years to prepare.”
DeWeese lost his bid for office to incumbent Jeff Van Drew by a count of 24,298 to 20,726.
“We had a good shot at winning,” he said. “This was my first foray into the political arena. Am I disappointed? Yes. Am I encouraged? Yes.”
“We started out back in May and the polling points said I was 40 points behind Senator Van Drew,” DeWeese told the Herald in a post-election interview. “And two weeks ago, in a poll by Stockton, it was 18 points. I think when the votes are counted, it will be more like one or two points.”
DeWeese hopes in the next several years to bring lost Republicans back into the fold. “We believe that over the next two years we can convince our Republican base to come home and stay the line at election time.”
According to the candidate, his campaign was a grassroots effort.
“We didn’t get a lot of support from up north,” he said. “Most of it came from Cape May and Cumberland counties.”
“We had hundreds of volunteers who made over 100,000 phone calls and knocked on over 10,000 doors. I want to thank them for their support.”
DeWeese noted that although he did not win this election, he looks forward to a future run for office. Voters of the First District want a representative with “uncompromising integrity and honesty to be put in the position. That’s what the First District deserves,” he said.
