DENNISVILLE – Kevin Connolly, a Dennis Township resident, recently attained the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest Boy Scout rank possible. The township committee issued an official proclamation at the Sept 13 meeting, recognizing Connolly for his achievement.
According to the proclamation, only 4% of all Boy Scouts do so. A total of 2.5 million scouts have become Eagle Scouts since 1911.
Kevin has begun basic training for the U.S. Army in Missouri. The Herald interviewed Kevin’s mom, Terri Connolly, about the project.
“We are residents of Dennis Township and Kevin has been in scouting since Cub Scouts when he started with a pack from Sea Isle City,” Connolly explained.
“Kevin is 18 and attended the Cape May County Technical School where he focused on law enforcement. He is using his Army National Guard experience to train as a military police officer during his basic training,” she said.
“Kevin’s project was to take on a neglected area of the VFW post in Sea Isle. It needed improvements and had fallen by the wayside due to Covid and a lack of attention.
“With Kevin’s current service in the military, there was a natural connection with the VFW post. He led his Boy Scout Troop, Troop #76 from Sea Isle, to recreate a garden which had been lost when a front deck was added to the outside,” she continued.
“Kevin raised over $5,000–double his original goal–to purchase supplies and materials for his Eagle Scout project such as landscaping stone, brickwork, shrubbery, topsoil, flowers and other materials. He conceived, designed and coordinated the construction of the refurbished garden. Over the course of three days, some of it in the pouring rain, he and his fellow scouts were able to finish this ambitious project in late spring of this year,” Connolly said.
