By Press Release

ERMA – Lower Township police were summoned to Lepore’s Pit, a part of the Cape Island Wildlife Management Area, July 24 at 4:08 p.m. for a report of the need for medical assistance.
According to a jointly-issued release from the Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey Sutherland and Lower Township Police Chief William Mastriana, officers were directed to the bank of a lake where they found a male, later identified as Victor Zenglin, 34, of Villas, on his back. He was unconscious and attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.
A joint investigation was undertaken by the Major Crimes Unit of the Prosecutor’s Office and the Lower Township Police Department detectives.
A July 25 autopsy was conducted by the Southern Regional Medical Examiner who ruled that there were no signs of foul play, and Zenglin’s manner of death was listed as “pending toxicology” reports.
Sutherland and Mastriana assured the public that there was no reason to be alarmed of any danger in the surrounding area of the incident. As details evolve more information will be released.
Sutherland noted that this is an ongoing investigation. He urged anyone with information about the incident to contact the Prosecutor’s Office at (609) 465-1135 or Lower Township Police Department at (609) 886-1619.
Those reports may also be submitted anonymously through the Cape May County Sheriff’s Tip Line at cmcsheriff.net and click on “anonymous tip.”
