WILDWOOD CREST— Police received a received a 9-1-1 call, Wed., Oct. 12 reporting a “man with a gun” in the area of Charleston and New Jersey avenues.
The reporting party, later determined to be a juvenile, stated that they were running from three men who had attempted to burglarize a vehicle at that location, one of which was armed with a handgun.
The reporting party then hung up the phone and the 9-1-1- operator was unable to make any further contact.
Officers conducted a thorough search of the area; however, they were not able to locate either the accused or the reporting party.
Further investigation revealed the reported incident was fabricated and used as a diversion to draw the officers away from the north end of town.
Officers determined that the juvenile caller had made up the story so that an acquaintance, Mark A. Bakanowsky, of Rio Grande, who was driving on a suspended license, could leave Wildwood Crest without being stopped by police.
The juvenile was taken into custody and charged with False Public Alarms and was later released to a guardian.
A warrant was issued for Bakanowsky and he was arrested the following day by Middle township police. He was charged with False Public Alarm and Driving While Suspended.
Bakanowsky was released on bail.
