TRENTON – Sheila Kahl, of Point Pleasant, was sentenced to 13 months in prison May 13 for her role in a $1-million Medicare fraud.
In a December 2016 release, former U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman commended Cape May County Office of Consumer Affairs and Department of Aging and Disability Services for their roles in a widespread investigation that led to Kahl pleading guilty before U.S. District Judge Anne E. Thompson in Trenton federal court to an information charging her with one count of conspiring to commit health care fraud and one count of conspiring to wrongfully access individually identifiable health information and pay illegal remunerations to health care professionals.
In that release, Fishman stated that Kahl admitted she wrongfully accessed protected health information and paid kickbacks to health care professionals on behalf of a $1-million Medicare fraud scheme involving the purported non-profit The Good Samaritans of America. Kahl was ordered to three years of supervised release and to pay restitution of $1.2 million in addition to 13 months in prison.
