The following is based on information received from a law enforcement agency.
WILDWOOD – A Wildwood woman’s Jan. 24 death after her arrest is under investigation.
According to a March 7 release from the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office, on Jan. 19, at approximately 8:41 p.m. the Wildwood Police Department Patrol Division arrested Margarita Candelaria Betancourt, 60, a resident of Wildwood, for possession of controlled dangerous substance paraphernalia in the area of Cresse and New Jersey avenues in Wildwood.
Candelaria-Betancourt was arrested without incident and taken to the Wildwood Police Department. While being processed, Candelaria-Betancourt requested medical assistance.
The Wildwood Fire Department responded to the Police Department to treat Candelaria-Betancourt. While being treated, she lost consciousness.
Fire Department personnel rendered aid and transported Candelaria-Betancourt to Cape Regional Medical Center. Candelaria-Betancourt died Jan. 24, at Cooper University Medical Center in Camden.
The cause and manner of death are currently listed as “pending” by the Southern Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.
The initial arrest was conducted by Patrolman Tristan Johns and Patrolman Christopher Galloway of the Wildwood Police Department Patrol Division. This is an active investigation being conducted by the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office Professional Standards Unit.
