HOWELL– Diana Hoffmann, 30, of Blackwood, Camden County, appeared in court this afternoon to face multiple charges.
Hoffmann led New Jersey State Police on a search for a bogus accomplice before Trooper Marc Castellano was fatally struck by a car. Hoffmann, a single mother of four, was not driving the car that struck Castellano. She had abandoned her car near Exit 31B on Route 195 west and told police she was accompanied by a man with a gun who had fled.
According to state police, It was during a search of that wooded area in Howell that Castellano was struck by a car on Route 195 driven by an unidentified motorist. That driver stopped at the scene and has not been charged.
Hoffmann is charged with eluding, hindering apprehension, resisting arrest and possession of heroin and cocaine stemming from a police chase Sunday morning.
Executive Assistant Monmouth County Prosecutor Richard Incremona said his office expects to file another, more serious, charge against Hoffmann by the end of the day today, according to the Star Ledger.
That charge, creating a false public alarm, is a first degree offense that holds a person responsible for a death related to a false public alarm. She could face life in prison if convicted of that offense.
Hoffmann’s bail has been set at $500,000 cash.
