WILDWOOD — On July 24, at approximately 12:20 a.m., officers from the Wildwood Police Department Uniformed Patrol Division responded to a call. of a possible burglary in progress at the Riggins Service Station at 325 West Rio Grande Ave.
A neighbor informed officers who responded to the scene that he had observed a male exiting the Riggins Service Station office area carrying items, at a time when the business was closed.
The neighbor provided a description of the perpetrator, and when the perpetrator was found hiding in yard in the 30 block of West Andrews Avenue, the neighbor made a positive identification of the male as being the subject he saw in the Riggins Service Station. The subject was taken into custody without incident.
In the yard where the male suspect was located, property that had been removed from the Riggins Service Station valued in excess of $300 was also found.
Further investigation into this matter by members of the Wildwood Police Department Detective Division tied the perpetrator to the recovered stolen items from the service station.
The perpetrator was identified as William Smith, a 22-year-old male, who is employed as a roofer, and who resides in Del Haven. Smith was issued criminal complaints from this incident for burglary (a crime of the third degree), theft (a crime of the fourth degree), and possession of drug paraphernalia (a disorderly person’s offense).
Judge David S. DeWeese set bail at $50,000 cash or bond no 10 percent, and a condition of release being no contact with the victim. Smith could not post the required bail, and was lodged in the Cape May County Correctional Center.
