The following is based on information received from a law enforcement agency. The person named is innocent until proven otherwise in court.
VILLAS – Lower Township Police received a 911 call Aug. 8 about 11:30 a.m. from an unnamed citizen reporting a man in possession of a handgun in the area of Bayshore Road and East Greenwood Avenue.
Patrolman William Kocis was in the area of the call and responded. The caller informed police dispatch that this same male had just boarded a New Jersey Transit bus, which was then traveling northbound on Bayshore Road.
Upon the bus stopping for passengers, Kocis and Special Officer Timothy Urquhart boarded the bus and made contact with the suspect, later identified as Decarlo Fleming, 50, of Greenwood Avenue, Villas.
He was initially removed from the bus for the safety of others. Fleming immediately fled on foot as officers attempted to investigate the initial allegation.
He was apprehended after a short foot pursuit and was found to be in possession of a black handgun with ammunition. He was then searched, arrested and transported to Lower Township Police Headquarters for processing.
Fleming was subsequently placed on a warrant for possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes, unlawful possession of a handgun and certain persons not to have weapons, all second-degree indictable offenses.
Fleming was transported and lodged in the Cape May County Correctional Center.
While in-processing at the Correctional Center, he was additionally found to be in possession of control dangerous substances and was also charged for this offense on a summons for possession of CDS. He was awaiting further adjudication.
The investigation was done by Kocis and Urquhart of the Lower Township Police Department.
