MAYVILLE — Middle Township police have charged a suspect who barricaded himself in a Route 9 home early on Jan. 11, with gun possession and a child support warrant, other charges are pending.
According to police, at approximately 12:42 a.m., they received a call requesting they check the well being of John V. Robinson, 51 at a 1015 Route 9 here.
Robinson had reportedly made comments that he was possibly suicidal; that he also made threats of violence against others and the police. He also reported that there was a warrant out for his arrest.
Police researched and were able to locate the address, and attempted to make contact with him.
Upon arrival of police at the residence, a detached building at the rear of a property at 1018 US Route 9, they were able, initially to make contact with Robinson, who then fled in the home. Police followed and he retreated into a small bunker room through a trap door, which was built into the home.
Fearing a booby trap situation, police backed out of the home and set up a perimeter around the property.
Police continued to attempt to make contact with him.
Additional resources were summoned. They included the Cape May County Regional SWAT Team, police negotiators from Middle Township Police and Wildwood Police Departments, Middle Township Rescue, and Court House Fire Department.
The Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office responded with investigators and a command vehicle. Atlantic City Police Department Bomb Squad also responded to the scene.
At about 6:15 a.m., surrounding homes were evacuated, and residents were taken to the Court House Fire Department.
Route 9 from Shellbay Avenue to Oyster Road was closed, and traffic was detoured by the Cape May County Fire Police and NJ Department of Transportation.
Robots and cameras from the Atlantic City Bomb Squad and the Cape May County Prosecutors Office were deployed into the home, and observed in the room what appeared to be propane style containers and wires.
It was also observed that the suspect appeared to be incapacitated. At approximately 9:30 a.m. SWAT team members entered the home and took the suspect into custody without incident.
Robinson was transported to Cape Regional Medical Center under police guard for evaluation.
The residence was then searched by bomb squad technicians and found to be safe.
Robinson was charged with outstanding child support warrant and possession of a weapon (stun gun). Other additional related charges are pending.
No one was injured during the incident and residents were returned to their homes, and the roadway, reopened at approximately 10:15 a.m.
