RIO GRANDE– Police confirm they have a man in custody after a violent carjacking Mon., Sept. 6 in front of Lowe’s.
Middle Township Police spokesman Lt. John Edwards said Charles Wallace, 74, of Leesburg, Florida, and his wife Joanne, 71, were loading lumber in their car with the vehicle running when Joshua Dupont, 23, of Deptford jumped into the vehicle. Mr. Wallace attempted to stop the man and was thrown to the ground. Wallace’s wife was knocked down when the car thief fled the scene at a high rate of speed.
While fleeing the scene Dupont struck a parked car then continued north on Route 9. Dupont ditched the vehicle at the A and J trailer park where officers spotted the suspect. Edwards said officers were in a brief foot pursuit before the Dupont was apprehended.
A state police helicopter and county K-9 unit were requested to search for a possible second suspect however Edwards said they have confirmed only one person was involved.
Charles and Joanne Wallace were transported to Cape Regional Medical Center for evaluation, Edwards said.
Dupont was charged with carjacking, eluding and several motor-vehicle offenses. He was placed in the Cape May County Jail on $50,000 bail.
