VILLAS – Lower Township Police were dispatched to a convenience store in Villas May 15, at approximately 1:37 p.m., for a report of a suspicious male and other suspicious activity. The caller reported two suspicious white males exiting the shrubbery in the parking lot of the store.
According to a release, while en route to the convenience store, police dispatch was advised by a witness on scene that one of the two males might have gone unconscious and was lying in the parking lot. The other male was reported to have fled the area on foot. It was also reported the second male may have the other individual’s wallet and cellphone.
Upon arrival, responding officers made contact with John H. Leszcynski, 38, who claimed to have no address. Leszcynski was conscious and alert, sitting against the outside wall of the convenience store.
Lower Township Rescue Squad arrived on scene due to the report of the subject possibly being unconscious. Leszcynski was subsequently evaluated on scene and claimed to be dehydrated. Leszcynski reported that his wallet, cellphone, and bicycle were missing. A description of the second male was ascertained by officers on scene and a search of the area was conducted. Further investigation revealed that Leszcynski had two outstanding warrants for his arrest. He was placed under arrest and search subsequent to arrest, and was found to be in possession of drug paraphernalia.
A short time later, Special Officer Harkin located the second male, identified as Ernest F. Irons, 38, who lives in the area. Irons was found to be in possession of Leszcynski’s wallet and cell phone. Irons was immediately placed under arrest and search subsequent to arrest, and was found to be in possession of a substance believed to be a controlled dangerous substance (CDS), a hypodermic needle, drug paraphernalia, as well as Leszcynski’s wallet and cellphone. Irons was then transported to Lower Township Police headquarters.
During the arrest processing at Lower Township Police headquarters, Leszcynski became extremely belligerent with officers. He also made comments en route to police headquarters, stating he previously assaulted Irons several days prior.
Lower Township Police detectives assisted in the investigation and obtained additional information that Irons had been the victim of an aggravated assault May 11. Leszcynski allegedly accused Irons of stealing and using his items.
During the argument, Irons was struck by Leszcynski, who was allegedly wearing brass knuckles. Irons stated he was struck under his left eye and had visible injury consistent with this claim. After being struck, Irons temporarily lost consciousness and had blurred vision. Leszcynski then helped Irons to his feet and threatened to kill him if he told anyone about the assault.
Irons was transported to Cape Regional Medical Center to have his injuries evaluated. Medical staff later advised that Irons had a fracture in the bone below his left eye. Leszcynski was also charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, aggravated assault, certain persons not to possess a weapon, and terroristic threats.
Leszcynski was lodged in the Cape May County Correctional Center where he awaits further adjudication. Irons, after being released from Cape Regional Medical Center, was lodged in the Cape May County Correctional Center where he also awaits further adjudication.
The investigation is continuing by Lower Township Patrol and Detective Divisions.
The individual(s) listed is/are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
