Two Men Indicted in Death of Woodbine Teen

By Deborah McGuire

COURT HOUSE —Two Millville men were indicted by a Cape May County grand jury in the death of 19-year-old Khalil Wallace of Woodbine. The jury handed up the 17 count indictment Tue., June 26.
Wallace’s body was found Oct. 6, 2011 in a Downe Township lake. Positive identification was made through fingerprints. Wallace was last seen the afternoon of Sept. 20, 2011 out-side a Dollar Plus store on Washington Avenue, Woodbine. He was reported missing by family members Sept. 22, 2011.
“From the state’s point of view, there are three primary defendants involved in the homicide murder of Khalil Wallace,” said Cape May County Assistant Prosecutor Robert Johnson. “Two of them were indicted. Andre “Abby” Gross and Norman Gray.”
A third man, identified in the indictment, as “B.C.” was not named in the indictment. Boris Curwin, 19, of Millville will be charged with an accusation.
“We do our accusations if we are able to come to some sort of a plea agreement,” said Johnson. “Rather than going through the indictment process, they waive indictment and plead guilty. We’ve been able to resolve that matter by way of plea agreement. That will be happening in the next couple of weeks.”
A third defendant, Tyshawn Milledge of Bridgeton, was also named in the indictment. Milledge was charged with one count of helping to hinder the apprehension of others.
According to Johnson, charges against Gross and Gray may result in prison sentences of 30 years to life. “There are two different forms of murder,” explained Johnson. Gross and Gray have been charged with both forms; ordinary murder as well as felony murder.
Wallace, the father of an infant daughter at the time of his death, was a standout athlete at Millville High School and Rowan University. Shortly after his disappearance the charred remains of the Chrysler minivan he was last seen entering, were found in Southwest Philadelphia. Wallace’s cell phone was found in the Germantown section of Philadelphia.
In addition to murder charges Gross and Gray have been charged with other offenses. “They are being charged with kidnapping, which is a first-degree offense,” said Johnson, armed robbery, which is a first-degree offense. They are charged with gang criminality, which is a first-degree offense. They are charged with luring an adult victim into a vehicle and they are charged with various weapons offenses including unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes. They are also charged with desecrating, moving, or concealing a human body.”
Gross, Gray and Curwin are all being housed in different jails at the current time. “All three are being held in separate facilities for safety issues,” said Johnson.
According to Johnson the defendants were arrested quickly because of the work of the state police and Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office. Police were able to utilize technology that tracked cell phone usage. “That helped lead to a body,” said Johnson. “The use of the phone helped lead to the tracking of them and helped us locate the body of Khalil Wallace.”
